Kitesurfing in Cape Town

Cape Town

I recently visited Cape Town this year, and before we go any further, I will say this is one of my favourite ever destinations I have visited, and not just because of the quite simply epic kite surfing conditions.

Flights

The Four main airlines to fly with are British Airways, Virgin, SA Airways, and KLM.You can either fly, via Dubai, or even Jo’Burg for the cheapest flights

Wind

The wind season is November to March, although I did go in December last year, and didn’t get quite as reliable conditions as I did this year in which I went in the middle of January. I only managed to get two weeks in, but managed 13 days of 9 and eventually 7m weather. The Wind is like no other place. If I could sum up the conditions one would expect to get in cape town in the wind season, I would use the word “gnarly”, so gnarly that this year I only took my 9m Fuel, (used it twice) and my 7m Fuel which I used every day but one. The wind is a cold and dense air which has a lot of power unlike wind you get in other hot climates. 25 – 30kts is just like it is here in the U.K.

General trade direction is SE/S

Conditions

South Africa offers a huge range of conditions, and what seems like limitless kite surfing spots around the coast. Hermanus, Wit sands, Witsand, Big Bay, Dolphin Beach, Sunset, Cape Point... the list is endless, but offer all sorts of conditions, from butter flat, to 3m plus waves.

What else the place offers

The best part of living or holidaying in south Africa is surely the prices of food, accommodation and general living expenses, which in some cases is a fraction of what it is in the u.k. Good Food is all too easy to find, and the meats, fruits and veg is often of far higher quality and taste than the supermarket rubbish you get in the U.K if you like steak then you are going to the right place.

You must rent a car though, places spread out, and when there is no wind, the car will open the door to a lot of opportunities, such as visiting the wine farms, or heading up the coast. The great thing about Cape Town is the number of possibilities to keep you entertained when there is no wind. There are plenty of things to try, and experience that will blow your mind.

Accommodation

Accommodation is all too easy to find, but in the busy season, it gets incredibly booked up so it’s worth making plans early.

I stayed at the Endless summer Beach House, which has an unbeatable vibe. It’s cheap, £12 per night for a double room. The Endless summer beachhouse has a superb vibe. Its always buzzing with young people from all over the world of ages between 18 - 40, who share the same passion and enthusiasm as you do. A sea view, compressor, WI FI internet access, kitchen, hammocks, BBQ Car park, and kite pack down area.  There is never a dull evening
