Kitesurfing holiday to cabarete

Cabarete, in the north east of the Dominican Republic is considered to be the kite surfing capital of the world. Its not only blessed with some of the best trade winds in the Caribbean but the whole town has developed quickly around the sport over the last decade meaning Cabarete can accommodate for any aspect of the sport you are involved in. The trade winds begin to blow from April to September with the most reliable months being late June to the end of July.

I have only just returned from Cabarete in which I spent 21 days, and was able to kite every single day, which is quite impressive. Cabarete is also home to the annual PKRA kitesurf world cup which is held during the end of June and is fabulous to watch if you happen to be out there at the same time.

Lunch at Kiteclub, Kitebeach

Pkra world cup Boso beach

Cabarete has two main Kite beaches, Boso beach the main beach and Kite beach which slightly quieter because it is situated further downwind.

Both have great waves, a reef, chop and flat sections. The standard of riding on these beaches is world class. You will often find yourself kiting with some of the world’s best including Susie Mai, Aeriel Corneil, Andre Phillip and many more, especially around the time of the PKRA event.

Wind is generally 13 to 30 knots every day. Winds pick up at around 11 or 12 o clock and blow all day till around 7pm.

La Boca

Cabarete also has the perfect flat water spot, La Boca, a river mouth about 10km upwind of kite beach. You can spend hours here, and when you have had enough just kitesurf back down the coast to Boso beach, a walk away from our doorstep.

Downwind trips are also a must when you are in Cabarete. EH, the local kite company organise down winders on a weekly basis with their handy “downwind truck” which drops up to 25 people off 30km upwind of kite beach and enables them to kite down. An awesome trip as i am sure you can imagine.Cabarete also has some great surfing locations to take advantage of the morning swells before the wind picks up.

Encuentro, the local surf spot has equipment and lessons to rent with friendly staff who know the waves like the back of their hands.

Weather its canyoning, moto x riding, surfing, Hiking, Cascading,…..Cabarete has it all for you.

Reviews

'I went out to Cabarete in July for a week in order to get some consistent wind and to improve my riding. Had an amazing time and met some great people. I had a intermediate refresher course at Kiteclub and I feel that I have come along enormously. The club is set in a great location on the beach and has a very good restaurant/bar. The tuition is very focused and my small (and some not so small!) errors that were picked up on have really improved my riding. All the instructors were very friendly and not at all intimidating. Socially I had an excellent time; I travelled out alone, stayed at the Surfcamp and met people within the first ten minutes of arriving. Great for lone travellers and groups alike. The food is good and the atmosphere is excellent. I stayed in a studio which was more than adequate for my requirements although there were some more upmarket apartments available if required. They also run surfing trips in the morning which is perfect as it allows for a quick break before hitting the beach for some kiting. All arrangements were taken care of by Kiteitright.com from the accomodation to courses and the information that I received from them was very accurate and helpful. I thoroughly recommend Cabarete as a kiting destination and I am already planning next year but for longer than a week......."
